Personal space – a relatively new term but the notion is ancient and the psychology of studying personal space – or peripersonal space as it is known – tells us that there really is such a thing. Not only does it exist, but it is paramount to our emotional and mental wellbeing. The past few pandemic-stricken years have given the idea a whole new meaning. Our use of and relationship to space is forever altered. Space is the new luxury. And you don’t have to buy a ticket aboard Virgin Galactic to experience it. A number of select destinations within our atmosphere deliver this less obvious amenity in abundance, but perhaps none so gracefully as Oil Nut Bay’s Reef House.
The current owners of Reef House fell in love with the home’s exact location a decade before it became available to make their own. Instantly captured by the sensational views across Deep Bay towards Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island, they became one of the first families to commit to visionary developer David Victor Johnson’s dream of creating a sustainable community in harmony with nature.
And right from the outset, space was forefront in their minds.
“We really wanted to make each room a separate entity,” explained Reef House’s current owners, “as we knew our friends would be coming a long way to stay with us and would come for at least a week. A week is a long time to be socializing and the whole point of a holiday is to have some down time and to be able to chill.”
Accordingly, each of the four king bedrooms were designed as a separate pod, each with their private entrance, vast ensuite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, walk-in closet, and private balcony with lounge chairs overlooking the endless blues of the Caribbean Sea and neighboring North Sound islands.
These private pods are anchored by an elegant Great Room characterized by enormous floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto a glorious, heated infinity lap pool and the most heavenly of views. Also included in this space is an indoor dining area and a spacious powder room for guests. A separate kitchen, perfect for entertaining and private chef events, comes fully loaded with top of the range appliances. These include a vast Sub-Zero fridge and freezer with ice-maker and wine cooler as well as Wolf range, oven, and microwave.
The fabulous swimming pool is anchored at either end by a tiki hut creating two beautifully shaded outdoor living spaces, one for sitting and relaxing and the other, near to the kitchen, for outdoor dining. Another great feature of Reef House is the separate Media Room. With its shelves of intriguing paperbacks, super comfy couch and large flatscreen television, this is a wonderful spot in which to relax for a family movie night or if you simply need a respite from the sun. The Media Room can even double up as a fifth bedroom as it has its own bathroom with shower. Adjacent to the Media Room is the Laundry Room with twin washing machines and twin tumble dryers, as well as plenty of shelving for linen and towel storage.
Western facing in its orientation, Reef House not only boasts indescribably beautiful views, but also wonderful afternoon sun and stunning sunset skies.
“What we have loved about our time at Reef House,” shared the current owners, “is the tranquility of being in the hills surrounded by nature and beauty and yet having all the modern facilities to which we have all become so used. Sadly, our chapter has ended, but a new chapter is opening for the new owners of Reef House, and we sincerely hope that they love it and cherish it as much as we have done.”
Our recent re-evaluation of personal freedom has brought a renewed appreciation of life’s simple pleasures – time and space, sunshine and safety, wellbeing, and peace.
